How To Choose The Right Fishing Boat

Source: Flickr

Do you love to go fishing?
If you do, then you know that it is one of the most enjoyable ways to spend your time. And what you need then is the right fishing boat to help you get the most out of your fishing experiences. There are a lot of different types of fishing boats available. Different boats offer you different features depending on the type of fishing that you enjoy. Therefore, the first decision in choosing the right fishing boat will be to decide what type of fishing you plan on doing. This is important. For example, a bass boat would not work well for walleye fishing because it is not equipped to handle deep water and big waves.

You also need to determine what type of angler you are as well. In other words, do you plan on using the boat purely for fishing or would you like to use it for recreation as well, perhaps maybe even throw in a few skiing trips once in awhile. If you only want the boat for fishing then buy one designed especially for that purpose. If you like to do other water activities also then look for a boat with multiply features. Many of the newer designs such as the “sportfish” model are designed for excellent fishing and many other water activities as well.

The area in which you plan on fishing goes hand in hand with the type of fishing you plan on taking part in. For instance, will you be fishing in fresh water, salt water or both? If you will be fishing in saltwater, do you plan on going deep sea fishing or staying near the waters edge? These are important questions you need to consider to help you choose the right boat for your fishing needs.

Another question to consider is whether or not you will only be fishing during the day or if you will also be fishing during the night. If you do night fishing then you need to choose a boat that can provide you with some protection and is more comfortable than some fishing boats. Consider how many people will be accompanying you on your fishing trips. This is a big factor in choosing the right fishing boat. You will need to choose a boat that is big enough for everyone to fit comfortably and also have enough room to maneuver the fishing rods with ease.

You even need to decide if you prefer a fiberglass boat to an aluminum fishing boat. Each one has its own advantages and disadvantages. It all depends on the type of fishing you plan on doing. The bottom line is, before you go out to look for that perfect fishing boat, take time to consider the things we have mentioned above. Asking yourself all the right questions will aid you in deciding which fishing boat would be the best boat to fulfill all your needs.

Recipe: pizza, grilled

Source: Flickr

Pizza (Grilled)
To grill pizza, turn your grill into an outdoor oven.
First, build a fire for indirect-heat cooking: For a circular charcoal grill, carefully push the hot coals to the perimeter of the fire bed; for square or rectangular charcoal grills, push the hot coals into half of the bed; and for gas grills, heat the entire grill and then turn off the burners on one side.

You’ll be cooking the pizza on the part of the cooking grate that’s not directly over the heat, so divide and shape the dough into larger or smaller circles, squares or rectangles to fit that area.

Close the grill’s cover (or cover the pizza with a domed wok lid or pot lid or even a large stainless steel bowl), and you’ve got your outdoor oven.

To prevent the dough from sticking, swab the grill rack with a vegetable oil-soaked cloth or paper towels, safely held with grilling tongs. Also brush the dough on both sides with olive oil. The heat quickly firms up the dough, so it won’t droop through the bars. After 2 to 3 minutes (check occasionally to guard against burning), you can easily flip the now-stiff crust.

It’s then ready to top with ingredients, which you will have arranged nearby on a table or tray to help you work quickly. Smear lightly with homemade or store-bought pesto or tomato sauce. Add shredded cheeses, dabs of goat cheese, sliced vegetables (which will have been grilled in advance), sliced pepperoni, crumbled cooked sausage, tissue-thin prosciutto. Then, cover again and cook about 5 minutes more, until the cheese has melted.

Slide the finished pizza onto a cutting board, sprinkle with Parmesan and chopped fresh herbs and cut it into wedges or squares with a pizza wheel or large, sharp knife.

The Ins And Outs Of Bear Hunting

If you are looking for the hunting experience of your life, bear hunting is the thrill for you.
Whether it is brown bear, grizzly bear, or black bear, bear hunting is a dangerous yet thrilling experience that excites most hunters.

If grizzly bear hunting is what tickles your fancy, travel to Alaska and hunt in the Management Unit 9. Grizzly bears dominate MU 9. They dominate MU 21 in Alaska, too. Grizzly bears are considered one of the most dangerous, unpredictable bears in the world, so considerable care is required when hunting these types of bears.

It has been noted that Grizzly bears and brown bears are interchangeable. Outfitters and guides will dispute this belief as they encounter bears – both grizzly and brown – in their day-to-day life. Those that travel on the shore line while bear hunting will experience more brown bears. Those bear hunting more in the interior will come across more grizzlies. Grizzlies are also smaller than brown bears, but genetically, they are the same.

Brown bear hunting is as dangerous as hunting grizzlies. Brown bears are physically larger because they live in a more temperate climate and their diet is high protein, high fat salmon. They are also distinguished by their coloring, which can be anywhere from blonde to brown, and even black.

Black bears, smaller than other bears, are not in any danger of becoming extinct. Their only major threat is poaching. Legal hunting – that is hunting with a licence – regulates the number of bears able to be harvested, which is extremely important to preserve the number of bears in the wild.

Before you go bear hunting, make sure you have the proper equipment to make your hunt successful. Your hunting rifle must be a 30 calibre or higher. The best rifle to use is one that shoots consistently in all types of weather. Outfitters will also tell you that you are responsible for your own gear – the ammo, sleeping bags, personal items, and your firearms permit. Make sure you carry that permit with you at all times when hunting. Alcohol is permitted in camp, but only in moderation. Excessive drinking and firearms are a dangerous combination.

Food banks are the recipients of harvested game animals. As a bear is a huge animal, you would not be able to go through that much meat on your own, so outfitters, who are required by law to salvage the meat, donate it. You can take some bear meat home, if you wish.

Learn the tagging system of the area you plan on hunting in. Knowing this information will allow you to hunt other kinds of wild game – pending that you have the right permit to do so – while bear hunting.

What to Consider When Choosing a Hiking Trail

Source: Flickr

Are you interested in going on a hiking adventure? Whether that hiking adventure will last for a few hours or a whole weekend, you will need to choose a hiking trail. When it comes to choosing a hiking trail, you need to remember that you have a number of different options. No matter where in the United States you are located, you should have a number of hiking trails located a close distance away from your home.

Since you should have a number of different choices, when looking for a hiking trail to hike, you may be wondering how you can go about finding the “perfect,” hiking trail to hike. To help you choose the best hiking trail, there are a number of important factors that you may want to think about taking into consideration. A few of those factors are briefly outlined below for you.

One of the many factors that you will want to take into consideration is the difficulty of the hiking trail in question. You will find that hiking trails come in a number of different formats, particularly with difficulty levels. In fact, you may find that multiple parks have numerous hiking trails to choose from. Instead of choosing a hiking trail based on the beauty of the surroundings, you will want to examine difficulty. If this is your first time going on a hiking adventure, it may be best if you choose a trial that is designed for beginners or at least those at an intermediate level.

In conjunction with the difficultly of a trail, your safety is also something that should be take into consideration. You will want to make sure that you are on a hiking trial that is well maintained and well cared for. While it can be difficult to assess a hiking trail without visiting it, it is possible to do. If you know of anyone who has been hiking recently, you may want to ask them which hiking trail they took and their views on their experience, namely the condition of the hiking trail in question. You may also be able to use the internet, namely a search engine, to find popular hiking trails being discussed online.

Another factor that you may want to take into consideration, when looking for a hiking trail, is security. Is the hiking trail or hiking park in question closely monitored by staff, namely security guards? In today’s society, you can never be too careful, especially when in surroundings that are unfamiliar to you. Hiking trails or parks that have security guards are not only ideal in case you run into a problem, like with a stranger with bad intentions, but they are also great in the event of a hiking accident. Hiking trails or hiking parks with experienced staff members are less likely to have extreme or deadly hiking accidents.

As it was previously mentioned, hiking adventures can last for a few hours or be long as a whole weekend. If you are also interested in turning your hiking adventure into a camping one, you will need to find a hiking trail or at least a hiking park that has overnight accommodations. In most cases, you will find that these accommodations include an onsite campground. If you are only interested in hiking for the day, the overnight accommodations of the hiking trail or hiking park in question may not be a big concern of yours.

Price is another factor that you may want to take into consideration, when choosing a hiking trail to hike. In the United States, you will find that most hiking trails or parks are not free to visit. In all honesty, the fee that you are charged will all depend on the trail or park in question. Most of the time, you will find that the cost of hiking is affordable, but it is still something that you may want to take into consideration, especially if you are on a budget.

The above mentioned factors are just a few of the many factors that you may want to take into consideration, when looking for a hiking trail or a hiking part to visit. By keeping the above mentioned factors in mind, you will likely find that your next hiking adventure will be a memorable one.

Hunting goes Cyber

Hunting forums are a great place to update your knowledge base about hunting. The tips and tricks posted can come to your aide at any point of time. And you can also learn a lot from the experiences of your fellow hunters. Thus, you can easily avoid the mistakes  others committed. You can post your experiences and thoughts on the forum and let others take full advantage of them.

The tips I read in some of the hunting forums were really effective. One of them was that deer hunting is most effective at dawn or dusk because at this time of a day, the deer is most active. One more was that it is better to find the food source of the animal. You are most likely to trap it there. The third was to find trail marks of land animals. They can give you good idea of the places the animal visits very frequently. Fourth was to build a really good set of notes. Your quest for a hunt can easily weaken your memory. The fifth tip I came across was to keep the body movements to a minimum. Impulsive body actions can easily scare off of the animal. And the most important tip- Be Ready. Hunting is an exercise where a moment of inactivity can cost you.

The two most visited hunting forums are that of deers and ducks. In Deer hunting forums, you can find information regarding all the different species of deers like Whitetail, Mule, Moose, Elk, etc. In these forums, discussions about the different weapons used for deer hunting are also carried out. Weapons like Bow & Arrow, Rifle, Muzzleloader and Shotgun are discussed. Deer hunting forums are also a good place to sell unwanted hunting equipment. Here you can directly communicate with the buyer and bargain the rates. No third-party interference at all. You even get a chance to read about the different recipes of the deer. Discussions about different hunting spots also take place.

There are bear & wolf hunting tips and stories with tons of pictures. Duck hunting forums are similar to deer hunting forums. Only difference is that ducks are the topic of discussion in the former. Also you can talk about goose hunting in here. You can even play online hunting games in these forums. They act as a perfect simulator for the actual activity. Photo sharing is a very popular feature of duck hunting forums.

So we can easily see that hunting is no longer just an on-field activity. There is a lot which goes in it off-field as well. And this is happening due to the advent of internet. The hunting forums provide an excellent opportunity to expand the fun of hunting. They are also responsible for growing number of local hunters.

What Makes Fly Fishing Special

Fly fishing is a special approach to fishing.
Fly fishing is different from bait-casting or spin-casting because fly fishing uses a weighted line to carry the nearly weightless bait forward when casting. Traditional fishing tackle is designed to have a nearly weightless line carried by weighted bait on the end. Because of this important difference fly fishing has its own gear, equipment and terminology.

Fly fishing also requires some different techniques than traditional fishing. Traditional fishing may involve casting a baited hook and waiting for a fish to bite or casting and retrieving a baited hook. However, fly fishing involves casting repeatedly with brief pauses to allow the fly to float in the current.

Fly fishing rods are different than traditional fishing rods in several ways. Fly fishing rods are longer than most fishing rods with their length frequently between six and nine feet. Some fly fishing rods are even longer than nine feet, particularly those rods designed for salmon or steelhead fishing.

Fly fishing reels vary from traditional fishing reels as well. Fly fishing actually does not require much use of the reel. Early fly fishing reels were little more than storage space for the line. Fish are not reeled in when caught; rather, the angler strips line with his or her free hand. Many fly reels still are very primitive with designs very similar to those used in the 19th century.

Fly fishing line is quite different from traditional fishing line. While traditional fishing line is made of a clear, monofilament material, fly fishing line is comparatively heavy and translucent. Fly fishing line may be designed to float or to sink depending on the style of fishing it is intended for; the line also may be tapered or level, again depending on the type of fishing that is planned and the preference of the angler. Fly fishing line is available in different weights. Heavier line can be cast further and has greater wind-resistance than lighter line. However, a lighter line may provide for more precise casting by an experienced angler. Fly fishing line is normally around 90 feet long but may be attached to a backer to lengthen the overall line available for fish that like to fight.

A leader is attached to the end of the fly fishing line. The fly is tied to the end of the leader. The leader is a clear, monofilament line normally between six and fifteen feet in length. The leader is tapered to a narrower diameter an the end of the line.

Fly fishing is also special because of the variety of fishing opportunities it provides. Fly fishing techniques can be used on streams, rivers, ponds and lakes. Fly fishing works in salt water and fresh water, cold water and warm water. Fly fishing can open up many opportunities to fish new waters because the techniques and equipment are so adaptable.

Fly fishing includes an interesting history that extends back at least to the second century. Macedonian fishermen successfully used artificial flies on six-foot poles to catch fish with. Fly fishing popularity increased in 19th century England and Scotland before catching on in the United States.

Fly fishing is a historically interesting, challenging approach to fishing. Fly fishing offers many opportunities and variations to anglers. Fly fishing also includes a nostalgic element that may not be found with other fishing styles.

Excellent Menu for a Great Fourth Outdoors

Looking through the trees
Source: Flickr

The Fourth of July is America’s Independence Day. It is a special day in the minds and hearts of patriotic citizens of this country and there are many ways we celebrate that patriotism. If you are looking for a little something extra to add to your Independence Day menu try some of the ideas below. Remember that the red, white, and blue of the American flag can be excellent color additions to your fabulous fourth menu and make it definitely firework worthy.

It is fairly safe to say that for most of the country the weather on the fourth of July is going to be a little bit on the warm side. While there are exceptions to every rule this is the general rule of thumb. For this reason you should prepare your menu according to that and avoid foods that are going to melt quickly or will not look as appealing in warm weather. You should also take proper precautions for storage and keeping things from spoiling by leaving them out in the elements too long. Store as much of the food as possible until it is time to serve.

This may somewhat limit your offerings but opens the door to other offerings. Rather than have chilled pies for dessert choose cake that can be stored at room temperature. There are sure to be a few chilled recipes or dishes that are best served and/or stored chilled. Be sure to have plenty of cold gel packs or ice on hand and plenty of ice chests and other appropriate containers, especially if you are going to be camping or cooking out away from home, on hand to take care of at least the amount of food you are contributing that needs cold storage.

If you are going to be camping out or enjoying the great outdoors on the fourth consider foods that can be prepared with a Dutch oven. There are many great recipes and these foods can pretty well cook for the prescribed length of time and served immediately if you plan properly. These ovens are quite useful and can prepare everything from cakes and muffins to stews, chili, and roast beef with vegetables. In other words, a Dutch oven opens doors that may not be widely available to the average camper on a cookout.

Foil packet meals are also excellent choices for your Fourth of July cookouts. These leave little mess, little fuss, and more often than not taste great. Dishes such as Hobo Stew and Creek Bank Potatoes are very popular and quite savory for the average cook out. They are also rather simple to prepare with few ingredients. This makes them an excellent choice for cooking on a grill or even in a Dutch oven if you have one at your disposal, which I highly recommend not only for Fourth of July meal preparations but also any time you are cooking in the great outdoors. You might find that you love it so much you don’t want to do without it.

Another great tip when cooking away from home on the Fourth of July is to keep things simple. You do not want to lug around stacks of condiments, dishes, bowls, trays, etc. Keep things as simple as possible and try to use dishes that require few ingredients yet still taste great. The more simple things are when dining in the great outdoors the more you can appreciate the simplicity of being in the great outdoors.

Don’t forget the appeal of simple hamburgers, hot dogs, and brats as great Fourth of July meal ideas. These foods are easy to prepare, easy to clean up, and go great with chips. No muss, no fuss, remember? The less time you spend on meal preparations, the more time you have available to get around to enjoying your time in our great countryside. I can’t think of many better ways to celebrate our independence as a nation than by enjoying it.
